Five dead, 5 injured in a fatal road crash along Nnewi-Okigwe by Amichi road

A fatal road traffic crash occurred along the Nnewi-Okigwe road by Amichi, resulting in the loss of lives. Reports indicate that the crash claimed five lives: two adult males, one male child, and two female children. Five other individuals sustained injuries. In total, ten people (4 male adults, 1 female adult, 3 male children, and 2 female children) were involved in the incident, which took place on Friday, July 25, 2025, at approximately 21:39 hrs.


Sector Public Education Officer of the FRSC Anambra State Command, Margaret B Onabe, in a statement made available to newsmen on 26th July, 2025 said "Preliminary investigations suggest that the crash was caused by brake failure. The truck, traveling at high speed, failed brake and collided with other vehicles and pedestrians. The vehicles involved included a Mercedes-Benz truck with registration number NNE 893 ZG, a Honda motorcycle, and a Qlink motorcycle, among others".


"The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) rescue team, after receiving the call this morning, arrived at the crash scene within 31 minutes. The team managed traffic control at the crash site and searched the hospitals where the victims were taken".


"Reports from the Anglican Diocesan Hospital in Amechi indicate that six persons were brought to the facility, among whom three were confirmed dead on arrival, while one died later. The remaining two victims are currently responding to treatment. Reports from Pat Angelina Hospital in Amechi indicate that four victims were admitted with bruises and bone injuries, one male adult was confirmed dead and the others are all responding to treatment".


The Sector Commander, who took the morning flight from Abuja to Enugu, went directly to the crash scene upon arrival. There, she met with the FRSC towing team, which was working to remove the vehicles involved in the incident. 


Thereafter, she was received by the Mayor of Nnewi South, Honorable George Ezeogidi, who had been in contact with her even while she was leaving Abuja, along with the Unit Commander of Nnewi. She also met with Honorable Nomso Atuchukwu, Member of the House of Representatives for Nnewi South, and VPG of Amichi, Honorable Emmanuel Nzubechukwu, along with other council members of Amichi.


After supervising the towing operation, she visited several hospitals in the company of the PG, to meet with the victims of the crash and check on their recovery progress.


While discussing future collaborations, she advised the Mayor and the council members to work with the FRSC to organize a town hall meeting aimed at educating the motoring public in their jurisdiction. 


The hospitals she visited included Pat Angelina Hospital, Afube Civil Center, and the College of Nursing Science, all located in Amichi.


The Sector Commander expressed her condolences to the victims' families and emphasized the importance of road safety. "This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the necessity to obey traffic rules and regulations. Vehicles should be well maintained to prevent malfunctioning that invariably leads to crashes. We urge all road users to exercise caution and patience while driving to prevent such incidents in the future."


The Nnewi Unit Command is closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.

  Anambra Tribunal Strikes Out Maduka Petition. Four More May Withdraw. As Soludo , Uba Set To Inspect Materials . NKIRU NWAGBO. The Anambra governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Awka today stuck out the petition filed by the candidate of Accord party Dr Godwin Maduka.
