Police Arrest Woman, Daughter For Alleged Plot To Sell Two Children In Anambra

Police in Anambra State have arrested a 38 year old mother of eleven children and a young girl aged 17 years for plotting to sell two children in the state.


Mrs. Chinyere Chukwu and her daughter Miss Joy Chukwu were nabbed by officials of the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare for attempting to sell two of her grandsons.


Investigations revealed that Miss Joy Chukwu, who is the mother of the boys, had allegedly agreed to give out her two children to a prospective buyer at the rate of N1.8million.


Chukwu was arrested after the commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon Ify Obinabo posed as a buyer for the children.


The Commissioner was said to have hint  abiutbthe secret plot and willingness by Mrs Chukwu to sell off the teo unsuspecting young boys .


Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the media assistant to the commissioner disclosed this on Wednesdsy in a press release to newsmen in Awka the state capital.


She explained that the culprits had confessed to officials of the ministry after their arrest that the prevailing economic hardship in the country was the reason for their actions.


According to Ikeanyionwu : “Chinyere explained that she had 11 kids and couldn’t cater for them, hence her decision.


“The suspect said that since they were boys that they were kept at the price of N1million each but after serious bargaining the commissioner opted to N1.8million for both children.


“She said she developed interest in selling the children after her neighbour successfully sold one of her kids. She said this was her first attempt at the business.”


It was further gathered that the suspect hails from Ozubulu but was arrested at Okija where she resides with her children.


Further findings showed that even though she had only two kids for her late husband, the suspect bore the other nine for her lovers, after her husband’s demise.



Ikeanyionwu said the women affairs commissioner had ordered that the remaining children of the suspect be taken into state government’s custody for proper care while Chukwu’s neighbour would also be arrested for engaging in same business.
