Group offers 10 children scholarship,  palliative to widows in Anambra community


 A Community Based Organisation (CBO), Umuokpu Ukpo N’akwu Na-eziokwu in Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra has offered scholarship to 10 indigent children from Ukpo.

The group also gave out bags of rice, yam tubers, wrappers and cash  to scores of indigent widows, women and residents of Ukpo Community at an event to mark their two years anniversary on Thursday in Ukpo.

Mrs Ifeoma Nweze, President of the association said the members are daughters of Ukpo marriage within and outside the community.




She said their desire was to contribute towards the development of their fatherland through education, vocational skills and peace building.

Nweze said the scholarship was from Primary to tertiary levels, adding that the gesture was inline with their  believe that education is sure path to development.

Nweze named the beneficiaries of the scholarship drawn from Central School Ukpo, Obioma Primary School and Unity Primary School to include:  Arinze Okeke, Tobechukwu Ezekwesili, Goodluck  Okafor and Ekene Nwafor.

Others are: Chinelo Eze, Adora Anigbata, Nkechi Ezeani, Victoria Osakwe, Ifunanya Agwngwu, and Arinze Okonkwo.

She further said that the group was currently training five persons on various vocational skills, saying after the beneficiaries would be giving starter-pack on completion of the trainings.

Nweze said, the aim was to contribute to the development of their community through human capacity development and improved standard of living to the less privileged.

She said the palliatives was to caution the effects of economic hardship to the poorest of poor,  while the yam was to enable them participate in the new festival of the community coming in two days time.

Igwe Robert Eze, the traditional ruler of Ukpo described the group as worthy ambassadors of Ukpo community.

Eze represented by Chief Mike Eze, charged other community Based Organisations to emulate the Umuokpu Ukpo N’akwu Na-eziokwu in Ukpo to promote developmental programmes.

The traditional ruler said the task of developing Nigeria cannot be left for men folk or government alone.

“The daughters of Ukpo community have done what should be emulated by women across the South-East geo-political zone and beyond because the tasks of community development is for all”, he said.


Earlier, Chairman of the occasion, Pastor Obi Onwuakpa lauded the group for her vision and values, promising to support them morally, financially and otherwise.

He advised them  to ensure their.members are women with right virtues, saying that is the only way they can live good legacy in the society.

“Your name is good, but you must live by it. If there is anything Nigeria needs now, it is peace, truthfulness and unity”, he said.
