As part of efforts towards alleviating  poverty amongst widows and vulnerable women  in the South-East region, a philanthropist and President of the United business women Association of Nigeria and Diaspora, Mrs Nkiru Duru has distributed machines for the assistance of small scale industries to over 500 women in the area.

Speaking at the Sharon house in Onitsha  during the distribution of the items which include sowing machines, Blending Machines, bags of rice and wrappers, Mrs Duru said she is encouraging the beneficiaries to live an active lifestyle noting that women are the heart of many homes.

She said that  it is important to appreciate and empower them to enhance family and community development.

While advising the women she urged them to avoid jealousy saying" when you take your eyes off your goals and begin to look at the progress or success of others, it gives birth to jealousy.

"Never criticize successful people who are doing well. Maintain good character, great people emerge today because of their good character. Nobody  will want to do anything serious with someone with dubious character .

She expressed dismay over government neglect of widows in the country, insisting that during the electioneering period politicians will  make promises to the widows and vulnerable people that they will never fulfill after voting them into office.

"Today is my birthday and I chose to celebrate my fellow widows by empowering them .

"I am not giving out these items because I have money but because it gives me joy to put smile on the faces of the widows which I am one of them.

"I know what I passed through when my husband died. I married so early and I had two kids before his demise but today those kids who were in Nursary and primary school when their father died are now undergraduates" the President added.

Also speaking,  the National Publicity Secertary, Mrs Nkiru Nwagbo said With entrepreneurial support and capacity-building opportunities, it will enable UBWA to impact the society positively at various levels.

She therefore urged the government to support Women at all levels especially the vulnerable across the country capitalize on the empowerment for their own good.

Director of widows for the association Mrs Patience Ikeagu said Some of the widows that are being empowered today have nothing doing to feed their children but expressed happiness that Mrs Duru the founder of the United business woman association has come to their aide .

One of the beneficiaries Mrs Emily Obah said she is overwhelmed with the empowerment saying that the encouragement and support she received from the association would take her far and determined.
