Amanuke Community Boils Over Arrest and Imposition of Monarchs.

BY NKIRU NWAGBO

Hundreds of people from Amanuke community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Monday, protested against arrest and detention of it's traditional ruler Chief Dennis Ezebuilo Ezeuba  by the police and the imposition of another traditional ruler on the community by a section of the town.

Dennis, it would be recalled, was remanded in the police custody by Justice Hyeladzira Ajiya Nganjiwa of Awka Federal High Court following a case of impersonation of the Traditional Ruler of Amanuke and related issues initiated against him by the Police.

The protesters bearing placards some of which read, “Leadership is not by force, Amanuke is one with one king,’ ‘Igwe Dennis Is our crowned king of Amanuke Eri,’ ‘Amanuke stands with Igwe Dennis Ezebuilo’,” described their leader as duly crowned traditional ruler by the community following extant laws of the land as against Chief Alphonsus Ezebuilo, his cousin who was eventually certified king by the state government.

The villagers who stormed the government house Awka in their numbers alleged that one Mr Chikodi Anara the Special Adviser to Gov Willie Obiano on Security imposed a traditional ruler on the community and even secured certificate of recognition for him.

According to the spokesman of the group Mr Ikechukwu Nwafor Ikechukwu who spoke to reporters in Awka yesterday the community had elected it's traditional ruler in the year 2014 and was awaiting government presentation of his certificate of recognition before the current imposition.

"We are petitioning the Anambra state government over the imposition of another person as our traditional ruler when we already had a traditional ruler that was unanimously elected by the community.

"Some people came to our community and used the police to arrest Igwe Dennis Ezeilo on the grounds that he is impersonation and that he is not the Igwe of Amanuke and this was masterminded by the Special Adviser to the governor on security matters Mr Chikodi Anara who also imposed a traditional ruler on us.

We are urging the state government to come into this matter and release our traditional ruler who was arrested and also call Chikodi Anara to order before something dangerous happens.

We are peace loving people and loyal to the government of Anambra state but if nothing is done what will happen in Amanuke would be unthinkable.

When contacted Anara said that HRH Igwe Alphonsus Chijindu Ezebuilo (Ogbodudu II) of Amanuke in Awka North LGA went through all due processes according to the constitution of the community to emerge the Igwe-elect between 2014 and 2015. He was accordingly recognized and issued a certificate dated 12th July 2015 to that effect, signed by the Governor of Anambra State, H E Chief Dr Willie M. Obiano.

Since then, his nephew, Mr Dennis Ezebuilo has declared war on the peace of the community and openly swore that heads will roll if Igwe Alphonsus C. Ezebuilo is not dethroned and the mantle handed over to him (Dennis). He did many things to achieve this, one of which was, a petition to the Governor. The Governor directed that full investigation be carried out and on 29th February 2016, a Panel of Inquiry headed by Rev Fr Dr Eugene Anowai was inaugurated.

The Panel among other things recommended “that the Certificate of Recognition given to HRH Alphonsus Chijindu Ezebuilo by the Anambra State Government should stand”. In reference to Mr Dennis Ezebuilo, the Panel emphasized that “he was not even qualified in the first place to stand for election or selection”.

After the Panel’s report (which Dennis Ezebuilo ignored), he went to Court and instituted two different suits against the recognized Traditional Ruler, his uncle. Suit No. A/293/2016 was dismissed while in suit no. A/134/2016, judgment was given in favor of the recognized Traditional Ruler, Igwe Alphonsus C. Ezebuilo.

Dennis Ezebuilo still ignored the Court judgments and continued to cause serious trouble capable of causing breach of peace, total crisis and breakdown of law and order.

Dennis Ezebuilo declared that he is the Igwe of Amanuke and parades himself as such. Going forward from the current crisis he created, he, in collaboration with his cohorts, wrote a petition against HRH Igwe Alphonsus Ezebuilo to the Inspector General of Police. The Igwe was invited to Abuja and investigations began. A Police team was drafted to Anambra State for the purpose.

After investigations, Dennis Ezebuilo was arrested and is currently remanded in Police custody by the Federal High Court, Awka where he is facing criminal charges.
